Tips: Debian GNU/Linux Aptitude Basics

Installing, maintaining, and removing software is made simple with the Aptitude software package management utility included in the basic Debian GNU/Linux setup.  Below are a few of the very basic tasks that Aptitude can perform.

Searching for a software package by name:

# aptitude search PackageName | less

Installing a software package:

# aptitude install PackageName

Keeping installed software packages up-to-date:

# aptitude update
# aptitude safe-upgrade

Cleaning out outdated and unnecessary software package archives:

# aptitude autoclean
